Title: Chair with Tulips
This photograph was taken in the woods by my home in West Chester, PA on the morning of March 29, 2007.
A week earlier, my husband and I were cutting through the woods to get a coffee. By the little stream and up
on a little piece of land jetted out was a folding chair. Immediately, I thought what a great photo opportunity that would make for my 4x5. I kept thinking about the chair and that it needed a prop; but what? I had
purchased tulips and as they got older in the vase it came to me that they would be perfect on the chair. The tulips were decaying, the chair was rusty and old and the surroundings were still asleep from winter. When
the weather was better, I put my almost dead tulips in a plastic bag, gathered my 4x5, my Voigtlander Perkeo I and my new 35mm Holgamod and went into the woods. I draped the tulips over the seat of the chair and for the
next hour and a half took my photographs.
Before I put the tulips on the chair the space was cold and dead. The tulips softened the chair and made it look beautiful; and the surroundings a peaceful and inviting
space. The promise of Spring. |
